SuttaCentral is an NGO aiming to present Buddhist texts using the best technologies and design the modern web has to offer. By removing the limitations of language and tradition, SuttaCentral intends to “let the Buddha speak for himself”.
Partnership with STX Next:
since August 2017 (4 months)
The new SuttaCentral website
The SuttaCentral project is an online & offline library consisting of ~20,000 ancient Buddhist texts in 41 languages. The new version of the website will include includes detailed references, show relationships between the texts and provide the original text and translations where possible.
STX NEXT DELIVERED
The SuttaCentral team reached out to us with the idea to create a new website (based on a mockup they provided) with the plan of including offline functionality in the future. The project goal was to enable the public to access an online & offline library consisting of ~20,000 ancient Buddhist texts in 41 languages.
STX Next provided SuttaCentral with a full development team (backend devs, frontend devs, QA Tester and a Product Owner) as an extension of the client’s team. Thanks to the ongoing daily cooperation between the teams, we were able to clearly define the product and its requirements.
The program features implemented by STX Next include a graph database to support an enormous number of text connections (~400.000), key online website functionalities (text summaries, text views, dictionaries lookups, Pali scripts, different levels of text navigation, etc.) and PWA (offline) functionality to tackle the main user challenges (a slow/costly internet connection or lack of internet connectivity).
We came to STXnext looking for a partner to join our developers in putting together a site for Buddhist texts. It's a complex project, involving tens of thousands of texts and relations, and dealing with nearly forty languages. We've been more than happy with the process. The STXnext team has shown initiative and interest, and has been quick to adapt to working with our developers.
What I value the most in the project is the close work relation that we’ve had with the core SuttaCentral team and really smooth communication in key areas of work. We have collaborated as partners, so the whole team happy to suggest technology solutions as well as functionalities or design elements to be considered. What is more, the SuttaCentral team supported us daily with their expertise.
